History
What we first remember is the best player of soccer's history, Pelé. But everybody knows that there were and still are fantastic players in Brazil. After Pelé the best was Mané Garrincha. Later I'm going to talk about them and others that represented and represent Brazil in the World Cups.
I want to start telling how all began, how Brazil knew this sport called soccer.
Soccer (or futebol) was introducced officially in Brazil in 1894 by Charles Miller. Besides being the responsable for the introduction of soccer in Brazil,this brazilian, son of a english man and a brazilian woman, was the first outstanding player of the country.
In Rio de Janeiro's soccer, the man who helped its introduction was Oscar Cor. His participation was important for the foundation of one of the oldest soccerclub of Brazil, Fluminense Football Club , in 1902.
In 1906 the first championship of Rio de Janeiro was disputed, where Fluminense became champion.
For 9 years (1910 - 1919) more soccerteams and federations appeared in the country, making the sport more popular.
At first the black persons weren't accepted by the teams, but that changed quickly. The pionner, Vasco da Gama contracted some and later, the other teams too.
In 1921, the french, Jules Rimet was elected president of FIFA. Later, with his decisive participation, the first World Cup would take place.
The World Cups
World Cup of 1930,in Uruguay.
The host team defeated Argentina and became the first champion of a World Cup. Brazil had as a result 1 victory (4 x 0 Bolivia) and 1 defeat (1 x 2 Yuguslavia).
World Cup of 1934, in Italia.
Italia was champion and Brazil was eliminated by Spain, at the octave final (3 x 1).
World Cup of 1938, in France.
Italia became 2 time champion of the World Cup and Brazil did better, got the third place in the championship,after a defeat to the champion Italia.
World Cup of 1950, in Brazil.
The brazilian team played magnificently, however lost the final game to Uruguay. After the second goal of Gigghia, the stadium Maracanã remained in silence.
World Cup of 1954, in Swissland.
The brazilian staff was eliminated in quarter final by Hungary (4 x 2) The champion was Germany.
World Cup of 1958, in Sweden.
Brazil finally consecrate itself champion of the world. The final game was against Sweden, and it finished 5 x 2. The greatest revelation was Pelé, that in that year was 17. Brazil was the first country to win the Cup in a foreign continent.
World Cup of 1962, in Chile.
Brazil got the Cup again and proved its superiority. The brazilian player who became famous was Garrincha, and Pelé, that got hurt, was substituied by Amarildo. In the final game, Brazil defeated Tchecoslovakia (3 x 1).
World Cup of 1966, in England.
The brazilian team didn't repeat the good performances of the last Cups and didnt passed trough the octave final.
World Cup of 1970, in Mexico.
Brazil conquered the Cup for the third time, when it recover from the disappointment of the 1966 Cup, under comand of the coach Zagallo. This team didnt get a defeat neither a draw. The Julis Rimet Cup was definitive with Brazil, because of the third championship. Unfortunatly it would be robbed and melted.
World Cup of 1974, in Germany.
In this competicion Brazil got the fourth place. A new Cup was made in order to substitute the Julis Rimet, the World Cup of FIFA, this one with the possession forever transitory. Germany became champion.
World Cup of 1978, in Argentina.
The brazilian team, commanded by the coach Cláudio Coutinho, decided the third place with Italia, and got the victory. Argentina was the champion.
World Cup of 1982, in Spain.
Brazil remebered the good times of it soccer, and under leadership of Zico, played fabulously. However, it didnt passed trough the italian team, in a dramatic game, and didnt get into the semifinal. Italia was the champion.
World Cup of 1986, in Mexico.
The brazilian staff, with some players that had gone to the Cup of 82, as Zico, Sócrates and Falcão, and others that showed themselves, as Careca, Alemão and Muller, did very well. But in the quarter final it was eliminated in another dramatic game, this time against France, in penalties. Argentina was the champion.
World Cup of 1990, in Italia.
The brazilian coach Sebastião Lazaroni, who wanted to copy the european style of playing, assumed a defensive module, with 5 players in defensive sector, got only the failure,a poor ninth position. Germany became champion.
World Cup of 1994, in the United States of America.
After 24 years Brazil conquered more one world title, in a final game that would decide which country, Brazil or Italia, would be the first four-time champion of the world. Despite the defensive style, Brazil got victories with the help of the individual talent of the players Bebeto and Romário. In the final game, Brazil defetead Italia in penalties, after Roberto Baggio lost his shot. Brazil became the first four-time champion of the World Cup.
